Types of Photo Retouching
Usually in most cases, retouching takes place on a computer using software such as Adobe Photoshop. Photographs can be taken directly from a digital camera in their rawest state for retouching. Also, printed photographs, transparencies or negatives may be scanned in using a scanner for photo manipulation/retouching. At Cathedral Web Design we have the facilities to scan in all 3 formats - photo, negative and transparency. As well as colour correction or digitally cleaning up old or torn photographs we are able to superimpose a head onto a different body or change the wording on a sign.
History of Photo Retouching
Before we were able to retouch using computers and software such as Photoshop, photo retouching was achieved by scratching over the top of the photograph or making alterations using ink or paint. The earliest known case of photo manipulation occurred in the 1860s when a photograph of Abraham Lincoln was altered by using his body from a portrait from one artist and his head from another artist. The two were somehow joined together.
When computers gradually became introduced into our lives, the 1980s saw the first cases of digital retouching using 'Paintbox' on Quantel computers. In the early 1990s Photoshop effectively replaced most types of software as the package to use for retouching and photo manipulation.
